What does the "vitamins” word mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds found naturally in food. Vitamins help us absorb nutrients from foods we eat. Vitamins cannot be made by the body; they must be taken from food.

There are two types vitamins: water soluble or fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve readily in water. These include vitamin C (thiamine), Vitamin B1 (riboflavin), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), Vitamin C, B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), and Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). The liver and fat soluble vitamins are stored within the liver and in fatty tissue. Vitamin D, E, K and A are some examples.

Vitamins can be classified by their biological activity. There are eight main groups of vitamins.

  • A - essential for normal growth and maintenance of health.
  • C – essential for proper nerve function.
  • D – Essential for healthy teeth, bones and joints
  • E - Required for good vision & reproduction
  • K - essential for healthy muscles, nerves, and bones.
  • P - essential for strong bones, teeth and tendons

The recommended daily allowance of vitamins (RDA), varies according to age, gender, physical condition, and other factors. RDA values are set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

For adults aged 19 and older, the RDA for vitamin B is 400 micrograms daily. Because it is essential for the development of the fetus, pregnant women should consume 600 micrograms per daily. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants below one year old require 700mg per day. But, between 9 months to 12 months, the amount drops to 500mg per day.

Children between the ages of 1-18 need 800 micrograms per daily for obesity, while children overweight require 1000 micrograms. Children underweight or obese will need 1200 mg per day.

Children ages 4-8 years who have been diagnosed with anemia need 2200 micrograms per day of vitamin C.

2000 micrograms per person is necessary for general health. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding need 3000 micrograms per day due to increased nutrient requirements.

Adults over 70 need 1500 micrograms daily, as they lose 10% of their muscle every ten years.

Women who are pregnant or lactating need more than the RDA. Pregnant and breastfeeding women require 4000 micrograms each day during pregnancy and 2500 Micrograms each day after delivery. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 mg per day when breastmilk is being produced.
